My practice is a direct response to a question of reproduction. These constructions aren’t exact reproductions of any one thing I have witnessed but an abstraction of many memories. These new constructions are compositional frameworks that act as a new type of canvas for ideas to attach themselves. I use the pre-made to reinforce the narrative, the interplay between the semiotics of my materials and my narrative framework selectively focuses on particular lines of inquiry. I want to take an angle grinder and slice found compositions straight out of the landscape and take them home but that has all sorts of ethical and legal ramifications, often they were parts of peoples homes, businesses, or critical infrastructure. Photography was a decidedly underwhelming form of reproduction for these purposes so I constructed steel frames and began producing compositions from the very materials they were made of, if it were a road I’d use asphalt, a wall I’d use bricks. I have a new playground in which airport suppliers are more useful than anything in Cornelissen’s.
